TIPS TO BE MORE SUSTAINABLE AT HOME

The journey to becoming more earth conscious all starts at home. If you take the time to think about it, I’m sure there is at least one small lifestyle change you can make that would make a difference. As part of my sustainability journey, I’ve made it a habit to reflect monthly on all of my habits to see how I can be more sustainable. Recycling and using less plastic are a great start, but here are some other tips on what else you can do to go green at home. These tips may seem obvious to some, but every little change makes a huge impact on the environment.

Go Paperless

  • Do all of your banking online – no more statements or notices in the mail
  • Do all of your note taking on your laptop, tablet or phone as opposed to using notebooks
  • Read your favourite magazines and newspapers online – many companies will have the same content from their print sources on their online platform
  • Send letters and invites digitally

Beauty Routine

  • DON’T use cotton pads – opt for reusable pads to remove your makeup
  • Use skincare products that are “clean”, meaning the ingredients in these products won’t harm the environment when you wash them off your face
  • Donate any unused make up or skin care products instead of tossing them out
  • Try and repurpose your empty jars and bottles once you’ve finished your products
  • Don’t leave the water running when you’re brushing your teeth
  • Look for beauty products that have sustainable packaging

Tech Tips

  • When getting rid of your electronics, bring them to electronic recycling depots or donate them if they still work
  • Buy rechargeable batteries if possible
  • Use energy saving appliances
  • Remember to turn off the lights when you leave a room or leave the house
  • Use LED lighting – they use much less energy than regular light bulbs

In The Kitchen

  • Ditch plastic straws and opt for reusable metal alternatives
  • Use dish cloths instead of paper towels
  • Buy glass containers & jars to store leftovers instead of plastic
  • Use cold water whenever you can
  • Check your area to see if you have any package-free grocery stores – fill up your own jars & containers with groceries instead of buying packaged goods
  • Make sure your cutting board is made out of sustainable materials

Green Cleaning

  • Opt for natural aromatic products like plant oils instead of chemical air fresheners
  • Use baking soda or vinegar as a disinfectant
  • DIY your own cleaning products at home (make sure you do your research on what ingredients are best to use for whatever it is that you’re cleaning)
  • If buying commercial cleaning products, go for green brands (Nature Clean, Eco-Max and Green Works are some examples)
  • Use lemon and baking soda to clean your stainless steel appliances
